Citi often tests you before the camera turns on. A Citi HireVue is the second filter, not the first, and a generic "global bank" speech fails once the prompt asks why Citi specifically.
Citi is easy to mishandle if you copy a Goldman video plan. Goldman often puts HireVue near the front. Citi often makes you sit numerical, verbal, or situational tests first, then sends a video invite with a short window. Candidates who spent the week cramming three-statement questions and ignored the camera freeze when the prompt is "why Citi" in 45 seconds.
This guide is the Citi-specific HireVue playbook: where the stage sits, what the questions are actually for, how global-footprint motivation should sound, and how to practise without cloning a Morgan Stanley script.
Where HireVue sits in the Citi process
Citi recruiting is high volume and often front-loaded. A common UK and many global campus pattern is:
- Online application
- Online tests (numerical, verbal, situational judgement, or a mix)
- HireVue or another recorded video
- Live interviews or an assessment centre
US summer analyst paths can vary by division and hub. Trackr US (as of 11 Aug 2026) listed Citi Summer Analyst 2027 as open from about 16 Dec 2025 with no listed close, across New York and other US hubs. Trackr UK listed 2027 summer as rolling, with last year's opening around 6 Jan 2026. HireVue sits inside those funnels. It is not a second application.
Read the live invite. If you have not finished tests, finish tests. Camera practice still belongs in the same week, because the video window can be short once you pass.
What HireVue is usually scoring:
- Clarity under a clock after you already survived a test filter
- Motivation that names Citi, not "a global bulge bracket"
- Division fit (IB, markets, consumer, operations, or the live programme)
- Consistency with your CV and your test-stage professionalism
What it is not scoring: a world-map speech, a memorised paragraph, or a full technical case on camera.
Citi often tests you before the camera
This is the operational difference that catches people. Our psychometric test investment banking guide covers the timed test layer. Do not skip it to "save energy for HireVue." Citi can reject you on the tests and you will never see the video.
Once tests clear, treat the HireVue like a separate skill. Test stamina and video stamina are not the same. A candidate who just finished a numerical paper still needs a calm, specific "why Citi" that does not sound exhausted.
If your invite skips tests and goes straight to video, still prep both. Later rounds can add assessments or an assessment centre. Our assessment centre tips guide covers the group and case format that often follows a successful Citi video.
Does everyone get a Citi HireVue?
No. Invitation depends on role, hub, and earlier screens. Some paths use other video tools. Some move to live recruiter calls. Some candidates never pass tests.
Do not wait for certainty before you practise. If Citi is a real target, record timed answers in the same window you practise tests. Do not email recruiters after two quiet days asking where the HireVue is.
Question themes that show up on Citi HireVue
Expect some mix of:
- Why Citi
- Why this division or programme
- Tell me about yourself
- Teamwork, leadership, or working across locations and time zones
- A market, client, or commercial awareness prompt
- Occasional light technical or judgement questions
Build frameworks, not scripts. Structure: answer first, one reason, one example, close.
"Why Citi" fails when it is only "global presence." Everyone can say that. Better: one concrete franchise or network fact tied to your division, plus one CV proof that you can work across complexity (a cross-border project, a multilingual team, a client-facing role). Keep it to 45 seconds. Save the rest for live rounds.
For IB paths, keep deal motivation honest and light on camera. For markets paths, keep a simple product or market view ready. For other Citi programmes, use the language on the live job description instead of forcing an IBD essay.
Using the prep clock without panicking
When the prompt appears:
- Name the ask in your head
- Choose the example you already practised
- Speak in sections with one breath between them
- Stop when finished. Leftover time is fine.
Look at the camera, not your notes. Glancing down reads as evasive on a one-way video. Answer the question first. Bankers watching recorded answers are time-poor.
Our HireVue finance interview tips guide covers shared delivery rules. This page is about making those rules sound like Citi, not like a generic bank.
After HireVue: assessment centre and live rounds
If you pass, many Citi processes move to live interviews or an assessment centre. Group exercises, case tasks, and consistency checks matter more than another polished video. Update the stage the day the invite changes.
For phone or live screens, our telephone interview prep for finance helps you keep the same stories conversational when someone can interrupt. For the wider UK summer ladder, stay inside the Citi summer internship application guide.
Do not keep rehearsing HireVue answers when the next round is a group task. That is how people look over-scripted in the room.
Practise Citi answers with Finbound's Video Interview Prep
Finbound's Video Interview Prep lets you practise HireVue-length answers tied to Citi on your list: firm-linked prompts, a countdown timer, a transcript of what you said, and Fintelligence scores on content, structure, and delivery.
After each take, Finbound keeps the recording, transcript, and feedback against that Citi application so you can reopen weak answers later. Start for free, add the division you applied to, then open Finbound's Video Interview Prep (three practice runs included on the free plan). Full practice loop: HireVue practice for finance interviews.
If you are also prepping Morgan Stanley, keep the stories separate. Our Morgan Stanley HireVue guide is a sibling with a different calibration bar. Citi's video often sits after tests. Morgan Stanley's video often sits closer to the written screen. Do not reuse one recording script for both.
A week-one prep plan while tests and video overlap
Citi's trap is a split week: tests and camera in the same window.
Day 1: Confirm which Citi programme and hub you applied to. Write a why-Citi paragraph that names that path and one network or franchise fact.
Day 2: Timed test practice (numerical or situational, matching the invite). Short session. Do not burn the whole evening.
Day 3: Draft tell-me-about-yourself in ninety seconds with a clear endpoint (why this Citi internship).
Day 4: Pick two behavioural stories, including one about working across teams, locations, or time pressure.
Day 5: Record the video answers on camera with a timer. Review filler words and eye contact only.
Day 6: Re-record the weakest take. One more short test set if the assessment is still ahead.
Day 7: Rest the scripts. Skim your CV so live follow-ups will not contradict the video.
If the HireVue never arrives and you get a live screen instead, the same stories still transfer.
How Citi HireVue differs from other bulge-bracket videos
It is tempting to use one HireVue script for every bank. Do not.
| Bank pattern | What Citi does differently |
|---|---|
| Goldman often leads with a high "why us" franchise bar | Citi often makes you pass tests first, then asks why Citi without a map speech |
| JP Morgan often punishes wrong-division prestige | Citi also punishes generic "global bank" lines that could fit HSBC or any peer |
| Morgan Stanley often punishes later inconsistency | Citi adds assessment-centre group work after the video on many paths |
Practical differences:
- Practise tests and camera in the same week
- Keep one global-network proof that is specific, not a slogan
- Track programme name the day you apply
- Use Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan HireVue guides as siblings, not templates
Mistakes that waste a Citi HireVue
| Mistake | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Ignoring tests to focus on video | Pass the test filter, and still record practice takes |
| "Global presence" as the whole why Citi | Name division fit plus one concrete network proof |
| Waiting for the invite to practise | Prep after you apply if Citi is a real target |
| Reading notes line by line | Bullet cues and camera eye contact |
| Same script as Morgan Stanley | Rewrite for Citi's process and franchise |
| Still rehearsing video after an AC invite | Switch to group and case prep |
What to do after reading this
Expecting a Citi HireVue? Write four frameworks: why Citi, why your division, one behavioural story, and one commercial or client view. Record timed takes. Keep test practice in the same week if that stage is still live.
Then keep the wider process straight with our Citi summer internship application guide.
