Example of a Finance Resume: Annotated Samples for Internships and Analyst Roles

Templates explain structure. Examples show what recruiters actually skim. Use these annotated finance resume samples to rewrite your bullets before the next portal opens.

Ask anyone who has actually screened finance internship applications what breaks candidates, and it is rarely formatting. Most students have already absorbed "one page, clean layout" from a dozen careers-service emails. What nobody hands them is a real example of what a strong bullet looks like next to a weak one, side by side, on an actual resume, for an actual early-career applicant, not a fictional finance manager with a decade of experience.

That gap is what this guide fixes. Below are three annotated resumes for the profiles recruiters actually see (an undergraduate with no bulge-bracket internship yet, a markets-focused intern, and a career switcher), a weak-versus-strong bullet table you can hold up against your own draft, and a skills section built to survive interview cross-checks rather than just look busy. If you are applying to several firms at once, start for free so each tailored version sits next to the right application instead of scattered across desktop folders.

The skim map, before you write a single bullet

Before touching the samples, it helps to know what a recruiter's eye actually does in fifteen seconds. It lands on your name and contact line, drops to education for degree and grades, scans experience bullets for a number or an outcome, glances at leadership for anything beyond a membership card, then checks skills to see if you can back up what you claimed above.

ZoneWhat belongsCommon failure
HeaderName, email, phone, LinkedIn, cityPhoto, full home address, graphic logos
EducationDegree, university, graduation, GPA if strong, relevant modulesBuried under a fluff summary
ExperienceInternships, part-time, projects with ownershipDuty lists with no numbers
SkillsTools and languages you can demo"Team player", "hard-working", 20 logos

If your page fails that scan, no amount of "passion for markets" in a summary paragraph rescues it. Skip the objective statement entirely unless a portal forces a short profile field.

Example 1: the undergraduate with no bulge-bracket internship yet

This is the gap almost every second-year panics about, and it is far more common than the CVs on LinkedIn make it look. The fictional profile below is a second-year finance student with one spring insight week and one society leadership role, nothing more. It works because every bullet proves analysis or ownership, never prestige.

ALEX RIVERA
London | alex.rivera@email.com | linkedin.com/in/alexrivera

EDUCATION
University of Manchester - BSc Economics & Finance, expected 2027
First-year average: 72% | Modules: Financial Reporting, Corporate Finance, Econometrics

EXPERIENCE
Spring Insight Week - Mid-market M&A boutique (London) | Mar 2026
• Built a comps set of 8 UK software peers and summarised EV/EBITDA ranges for the deal team
• Drafted a 4-slide industry overview on subscription vs perpetual software pricing using public filings
• Shadowed client calls and logged 12 diligence questions that fed the next data-room request list

Research Assistant - University finance faculty | Oct 2025 - Present
• Cleaned a 5-year panel of 200 UK listed firms in Excel and flagged 14 missing-data outliers for review
• Produced weekly one-page notes linking earnings releases to peer valuation moves for seminar use

LEADERSHIP
Investment Society - Equity Research Lead | Sep 2025 - Present
• Led a 6-person team through a long/short pitch; model assumed 8% revenue CAGR and 200bps margin expansion
• Organised 4 alumni coffee chats with former analysts; 18 members attended at least one session

SKILLS
Excel (VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, basic 3-statement linking), PowerPoint, CapIQ (trained), Spanish (fluent)

What makes this work is not the insight week itself, plenty of candidates have one and still write it badly. It is that the education section stays specific without padding, the insight week bullets show output rather than "attended presentations," the research and society lines prove real handling of data and group delivery even without a full internship, and the skills line is short enough that every item on it is genuinely interview-safe.

Example 2: the markets-tilted intern

Same length rules apply, but the evidence a markets screen wants is different: pace, curiosity about live markets, and risk thinking, not modelling alone.

EXPERIENCE
Equity Markets Intern - Regional broker-dealer | Jun - Aug 2025
• Prepared pre-open notes on 5-8 US large-cap names each morning using overnight news and peer moves
• Tracked relative volume and gap opens for a 20-name coverage list; flagged 3 names for desk follow-up weekly
• Built a simple Excel watchlist that auto-coloured >2% moves so juniors could prioritise chatter

Campus Ambassador - Fintech payments startup | Jan - May 2025
• Ran 6 product demos for student societies; converted 40 sign-ups from 120 attendees (33% conversion)
• Wrote a one-page FAQ that cut repeat support questions from new users by roughly half over a month

If you are applying to IBD instead of markets with this same background, swap the top two bullets so modelling and diligence lead rather than pre-open notes. That swap, changing which two lines sit at the top of the same section, is the entire core of tailoring a resume across banks.

Example 3: the career switcher reframing existing work

Moving in from consulting, audit, or an unrelated degree feels like starting from zero, but it rarely is. The fix is not apologising for a missing bank logo, it is reframing work you have already done as analytical ownership.

Weak framingStronger framing
Assisted audit team on client filesReconciled 3 balance-sheet accounts weekly and cleared 12 open items before sign-off
Supported strategy deck for clientBuilt a unit-economics table that cut 2 slides from the partner deck and clarified CAC payback
Member of consulting societyLed a 4-week market-sizing workstream; delivered TAM/SAM/SOM ranges the team used in the final pitch

Keep the page to one, and drop older retail jobs once you have two analytical experiences worth the space. Whatever you write here, expect an interviewer to ask exactly how you got the number.

Weak versus strong bullets, the pattern to steal

Weak (duty)Strong (ownership + proof)
Responsible for financial analysisBuilt a monthly variance pack that explained a 4% opex overrun to the finance lead
Helped with Excel modelsLinked P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow for a campus case; stress-tested revenue ±10%
Worked on a team presentationOwned 6 of 12 slides on sector multiples; Q&A covered my comps methodology
Improved processesCut report prep from 3 hours to 45 minutes by standardising an Excel template used by 5 interns

The formula behind every strong bullet is verb, object, method or tool, then a measurable result or a clear decision it supported. If you genuinely cannot measure it, name the decision your work fed into instead of reaching for a vague adjective.

A skills line that survives the follow-up question

A good skills line reads like this: Excel (3-statement models, sensitivity tables), PowerPoint, Bloomberg (terminal training), Python (pandas for coursework), French (B2). A bad one reads like this: Leadership, communication, Microsoft Office, quick learner, Photoshop, 15 programming languages.

The difference is not politeness, it is risk. If a skill sits on your resume, assume a HireVue or superday interviewer will ask you to demonstrate it, and "15 programming languages" from a first-year invites exactly the question you cannot answer. Turning these examples into your own submit-ready page

Copy the section order from the samples, not the fictional metrics inside them. Rewrite each of your current bullets with the weak-versus-strong table open beside you, and cut anything a twenty-second skim does not need, hobbies with no signal, a two-line soft summary nobody asked for. Run formatting checks from the finance CV template ATS guide, and for each live application, change only the skim zones that actually differ: the skills line, the top bullets, one leadership line.

When several portals are open in parallel, keep firm, division, and stage in one place and start for free. Paid plans unlock CV Optimizer on /tools/cv, so each PDF rewrite stays tied to the right bank instead of floating in a dozen desktop drafts.

The mistakes these examples are built to avoid

Two pages for an undergraduate is the fastest way to lose a recruiter who rarely turns the page on early-career screens. Design templates with sidebars often fail parsing checks and hide your best proof exactly where a human never sees it. Copying LinkedIn influencer samples borrows the wrong length and tone, since most of those are written for mid-career FP&A roles, not summer analyst portals. Invented deal experience fails the moment anyone asks how you calculated a number. And sending one generic file to twelve banks wastes every advantage a five-minute skim-zone edit would have given you.

Use the samples above as a mirror. If your page still reads like a job description pasted into bullet points, that is the signal to rewrite before you submit, not after a recruiter tells you.
