FTI Consulting Internship Application Guide: 2027 Summer Cycle

Applications

FTI Consulting hires interns into expert practices, not a generic Big Four funnel. This handbook covers the 2027 US window, practice choice, and how to sound like you know the firm.

FTI Consulting is the firm students discover when they want restructuring-adjacent finance, disputes, economic analysis, or crisis communications, without treating investment banking as the only path that counts. It is specialist consulting. That is the point.

This handbook is for US undergraduates and early-career applicants targeting the 2027 summer window first. You will get the cycle dates, practice map, process shape, and the failure modes that make otherwise strong resumes die in screening. UK rolling sits as a short aside at the end of the timing section.

FTI Consulting is expert work, not a generalist brand

FTI’s public identity sits in expert consulting: Corporate Finance & Restructuring, Economic Consulting, Forensic and Litigation Consulting, Strategic Communications, and Technology, among related practice brands. Clients call when situations are messy. Distress. Disputes. Investigations. Transformations. High-stakes messaging.

That matters for your application because “I want consulting experience” is not enough. Screeners hear that line all summer. They need a practice-shaped reason and evidence that you can learn under pressure.

FTI is also not a bulge-bracket internship with pitch books as the whole identity. Some Corporate Finance & Restructuring work overlaps with skills you would use in restructuring IB or private credit diligence. The firm still interviews and staffs as consulting. Keep that distinction clear in how you talk about the job.

Pick a practice before you write why FTI

Do not apply to “FTI” as a logo. Apply to a practice you can defend in two minutes.

Corporate Finance & Restructuring is the natural bridge for students who also watch restructuring IB or private credit. If that is you, say so with precision. “I like markets” is weak. “I want to understand how capital structure decisions change in distress” is usable.

If your best evidence is writing and stakeholder work, do not invent a restructuring persona for a Strategic Communications listing. Practice mismatch is one of the fastest quiet rejects.

US deadline math for this window

The US consulting intern path is not an open-forever portal right now. Trackr shows a defined close on 18 September 2026. That is board timing as of 18 August 2026. Prefer the official careers page if the live posting disagrees.

Finish your resume first. A clean one-page format from our finance CV template ATS guide is enough structure for most student applications. Then submit while interview capacity still exists, not on the last evening of the window.

Put FTI on the same calendar as Big Four consulting and any restructuring-adjacent banks you are running. Waves collide. Students who treat FTI as “the specialist I will do later” often remember it after slots are gone. The deadlines guide is the boring tool that prevents that.

UK aside: Trackr lists the UK 2027 Summer Internship as rolling, with no fixed open or close in the snapshot week. Rolling still means apply when ready, not “someday.” Use the UK careers flow on fticonsulting.com/careers and treat US and UK as separate applications.

From portal to offer: how the process usually runs

Exact stages vary by practice and office. The shape most candidates report looks like this.

  1. Online application through careers / Workday with resume, and often a short motivation or preference for practice and location.
  2. Recruiter or early screen on fit, eligibility, and why this practice. Expect basic motivation and example answers, not a full case yet.
  3. Practice interviews with consultants. Behavioural questions plus judgement prompts that mirror the work (structured thinking, analytical clarity, composure with messy facts).
  4. Later or final rounds with more senior interviewers testing consistency. Can you keep the same practice reason when someone pushes back?

Some paths add online assessments or a case-style exercise. Treat those as listing-dependent. If an assessment appears, practise under a clock. Our assessment centre tips help with process discipline. Translate examples into consulting language, not banking slang, unless the interviewer clearly sits in a deals-adjacent Corporate Finance & Restructuring conversation.

Return offers and conversion rates are not published as a single firm-wide figure for interns. Strong summers matter. Do not plan your entire senior year around an assumed conversion percentage you saw on a forum.

Interview prep that matches expert consulting

Start with motivation that survives a swap test. If you replace “FTI” with a Big Four logo and the paragraph still works, rewrite it.

For Corporate Finance & Restructuring, build comfort with capital structure basics, what drives distress, and how process work differs from a healthy M&A pitch. Our restructuring investment banking career guide is useful adjacent reading. Remember you are still interviewing for consulting staffing, not a pure IB desk.

For Economic Consulting, practise explaining a quantitative project out loud. What was the question, what data did you trust, what would change your mind?

For Forensic and Litigation, prepare examples about careful review, incomplete information, and how you documented a conclusion. Professional scepticism beats bravado.

For Strategic Communications, bring writing judgement. Can you summarise a messy situation for two audiences without sounding theatrical?

Across practices, interviewers notice composure. Expert firms hire people who stay clear when facts are incomplete. Practise answering follow-ups without inventing certainty you do not have.

If you are also running private credit applications, keep the overlap honest without pretending FTI is a fund. Our private credit internship guide helps you keep those paths distinct.

Halfway through your prep week, add FTI in Finbound’s application tracker so the deadline and stage sit beside your other consulting and finance apps. An advanced priority algorithm ranks what to study next when those stages change. Soft mid-cycle habit. Not a substitute for submitting the application.

When FTI is a better fit than Big Four or IB

Choose FTI when you want specialist intensity more than platform breadth. Big Four consulting (see Deloitte and EY) can be a strong path if you want scale, many service lines, and a broad early-career brand. FTI is narrower and more expert-shaped.

Choose FTI over classic IB when you care about restructuring, disputes, investigations, or communications under pressure, and you are fine that the day-to-day is consulting delivery rather than live deal execution on a bank desk. If your only goal is bulge-bracket prestige language, you will sound off in FTI screens.

Neighbor applications that often sit beside FTI on a serious tracker:

  • Big Four consulting for breadth comparison
  • Restructuring-heavy advisory or RX IB paths if your evidence is finance-distress
  • Private credit if your interest is credit analysis rather than pure M&A

None of those replace naming a practice on the FTI listing.

Mistakes that waste a strong FTI application

The first is the generic consulting essay. Prestige, learning, teamwork. Every firm hears it.

The second is pitching FTI like investment banking. Screeners who live in expert consulting can tell when you only prepared for a bank superday.

The third is practice bait-and-switch. You wrote about Restructuring, then the conversation is Economic Consulting and you have no quantitative examples ready.

The fourth is waiting until mid-September because the close date “is still open.” Capacity often moves earlier than the formal line on the board.

The fifth is treating UK rolling and US window timing as the same calendar. They are not.

What to do after reading this

Applying to FTI Consulting this cycle?

Confirm the live 2027 Intern - Consulting listing on FTI careers, lock a practice and office, and aim to submit well before the 18 September 2026 US board close. Keep UK rolling as a separate path if that market is also on your list.
