Before another HireVue retake, fix the three things interviewers notice first: camera height, face light, and a calm desk background.
A weak HireVue take is often a setup problem disguised as a content problem. You can have a solid answer and still look rushed because the laptop is below your chin, the window behind you is blowing out the frame, or the desk looks like a laundry pile.
Fix the frame first. Then practise the answers.
Camera height before anything else
Eye-level camera is non-negotiable. A laptop on a table points upward, exaggerates fatigue, and makes you look like you are peering into a well.
- Stack a stable stand, box, or books under the laptop.
- Or mount a webcam / phone at eye level and keep the keyboard separate.
- Frame from mid-chest up with a little headroom; do not sit so far back that your face is a postage stamp.
If you already use an external monitor, a monitor arm can keep the camera and screen where you need them without eating the whole desk.
Light the face, not the wall behind you
Interviewers need to see your eyes. Backlight from a bright window turns you into a silhouette. A single overhead bulb digs shadows under your eyes.
Practical order of operations:
- Face a window or put a lamp in front of you and slightly above eye line.
- Dim or cover the bright source behind you.
- Do one test recording at the same time of day as your real window.

Desk and background: calm beats clever
You do not need a fake bookshelf set. You need a background that does not compete with your answer.
- Clear bottles, bags, and laundry from the camera cone.
- Keep one tidy zone behind you; blur is fine if your tool offers it, but a real tidy room is safer.
- Silence notifications and put your phone out of reach.

A 20-minute pre-HireVue checklist
- Camera at eye level; test framing.
- Face light checked in a 30-second recording.
- Background cleared in the visible cone.
- Headphones or mic tested; notifications off.
- Water nearby; notes out of camera view if you use them.
