Standard Chartered HireVue: Video Round Questions and How to Pass

Interviews

Standard Chartered is not a New York M&A factory, so its video round asks a different question: why this bank, and why this market. Here is how the recorded round works this cycle and how to prepare.

Standard Chartered is not a New York M&A factory with an Asia footnote. It is a network bank built around clients who move goods, capital and risk across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. That shapes the recorded round more than most candidates expect.

Many paths use a digital or recorded video interview, often HireVue or a similar platform. You answer pre-recorded questions on camera, with a short think time, followed by an assessment centre that can include a case study, a group exercise and a final competency interview.

This guide covers where the video sits in the process, the question families that show up, how to sound like a network-bank candidate rather than a generic one, and how to prepare before the invite arrives.

Where the video round sits in Standard Chartered's process

Applications run on sc.com early careers and jobs.standardchartered.com. For the 2027 cycle, Trackr US (as of 18 August 2026) listed the Internship Programme 2027 as open from 6 July 2026 to 31 December 2026 in New York. Trackr UK listed the 2027 intern programme as opening 17 August 2026, closing 31 December 2026, marked rolling, with stage Online Test.

A common ladder looks like this:

  1. Online application
  2. Online tests
  3. Recorded video or first-round interview
  4. Assessment centre
  5. Final competency interview

Order varies by market and division. Some paths skip video and go straight to a recruiter call. Read your invite, and confirm every date on sc.com early careers and jobs.standardchartered.com. Our Standard Chartered internship guide covers the full funnel and the current windows.

HireVue is a stage inside that funnel, not a second application. Trackr UK showed the 2027 intern row at the online-test stage in mid-August 2026, which means video can arrive soon after. Because review is often rolling, the video window can be short once your file clears the tests.

Why this market decides most recorded answers

Standard Chartered screens for fit with a market and a region, not for a bulge-bracket story. If you cannot say why you want this bank in this part of the world, the camera makes that obvious.

The swap test is simple. Read your answer back and replace "Standard Chartered" with another bank's name. If the answer still works, it is not ready.

Concrete hooks beat brochure language. A language or family tie to a coverage region only helps if you can discuss a client problem, not a holiday. A trade or development-finance interest needs one example of how capital actually moves.

Reviewers are not looking for a full investment thesis. They want to hear that you understand the bank's geography and can connect it to something you have actually done.

The question families on a Standard Chartered video

Community question lists cluster around the same families each cycle. Exact wording changes by requisition, so rehearse the framework, not a memorised script.

Why Standard Chartered, why this marketNetwork, trade and regional coverage you can defend

Light commercial or judgement promptStructure and curiosity, not a full valuation

The commercial prompt is lighter than a markets interview. Reviewers want to see how you think: what you would look at first, what you would ask for, and a tentative view. Do not bluff a full model on camera.

"Tell me about yourself" should be a 60-to-90 second walk through your CV that ends on this programme. "Why this market" needs a named region, a product and one reason. Keep one proof point per answer, and do not stretch a single story across four questions.

Saying something real about trade, markets and transaction banking

Standard Chartered's edge is the network. Its clients trade and invest across markets other banks treat as optional, so your answers should sound like you understand that.

Pick the division on your live posting and match it:

  • Global Banking: client coverage, credit and capital markets for cross-border corporates.
  • Financial markets: currencies, rates and credit, with a calm view under uncertainty.
  • Transaction banking: cash, trade finance and securities services that keep goods and money moving.
  • Consumer, private and wealth: client advice and service, not deal prestige.

A transaction-banking candidate who talks only about buyouts wastes the round. A Global Banking candidate who cannot name a region, corridor or client type sounds interchangeable with every other applicant.

Here the video is an early filter. It checks whether your motivation is real before anyone spends an hour with you at the assessment centre.

If other network banks are on your list, keep each video separate. Our HSBC HireVue guide and MUFG HireVue guide share the network theme but not the same questions. Practise each bank as itself.

Timings, attempts and the shift to the assessment centre

Prep companies often describe a handful of questions with about 30 seconds to think and about two minutes to speak. Treat those numbers as community reports, not a published Standard Chartered spec. Read your own invite for the count and any re-record option.

Do not count on a second attempt. Rehearse at the length you would actually use, so a single take is enough.

After the video, many markets move to an assessment centre. That can include a case study, a group exercise and a final competency interview. The video tests motivation and communication. The centre tests how you work with others and how you handle a live problem.

When you are ready to rehearse under a clock, use Finbound's Video Interview Prep. Record a timed answer and the feedback stays saved against Standard Chartered, so you can reopen weak takes and see what changed.

A 48-hour plan for your Standard Chartered video

If the invite is already open, spend two days on spoken answers.

Day one. Write three Standard Chartered-only lines: why this bank, why this market, and one story with a decision and a result. Say them aloud until they sound like speech. Then record tell me about yourself and your market answer.

Day two. Add a behavioural story and a light commercial prompt. Do one full run in the clothes and lighting you will actually use. Watch it once, fix the two worst habits, and record once more. Stop after three full takes.

Keep notes off camera. A glance down reads as reading. If you blank, pause, restart the sentence and finish.

What to do after reading this

Waiting on a Standard Chartered video, or applying this cycle? Pick your market, write the three bank-specific lines, and record at least one full take before the invite lands. Keep the operations side on the Standard Chartered internship guide.

Then try Finbound's Video Interview Prep for a timed take against Standard Chartered, and warm up with the timed numerical tests.
