PNC HireVue Questions 2026 and 2027: Format and How to Pass

Interviews

PNC screens most summer applicants with a recorded video before any live conversation, and it usually ends with a Super Day in Pittsburgh. Here is what the questions are testing and how to prepare.

PNC is a US bank headquartered in Pittsburgh, and its campus recruiting runs differently from a bulge-bracket bank. The firm opens internships and development programmes each August, encourages applications by around 16 September, and often re-posts roles through the winter as places free up. The recorded video is the first real filter, and for many candidates it is the stage that decides whether they ever speak to a banker.

This guide covers where the video sits in the PNC process, the question themes candidates report, how the games section works, and how to prepare when the invite lands. If you are still choosing a track, start with the application first, then come back to the video.

Where the PNC video sits in the process

PNC's own student timeline names a short sequence: apply, interview with a line of business, then final-round interviews at Super Day. Alongside that, PNC confirms that some roles require a pre-recorded virtual interview and a pre-employment assessment, without naming the vendors.

Candidates commonly fill in the detail like this:

Two things about this ladder matter for prep. The video is not a formality, and it is not the final round. It is a filter that decides who reaches a live conversation, so it rewards clarity over polish.

PNC also states that generative AI is not permitted in interviews or assessments. Do not plan around an AI assistant on screen. Plan around a clear answer you can deliver without reading.

PNC hires across corporate and institutional banking, asset management, retail, and technology, and the lines of business ask different questions. A capital markets candidate should be ready to talk about markets or clients. A corporate banking candidate should sound comfortable with relationships and credit. The video punishes a generic "why banking" answer because the reviewer already knows which desk you picked.

If you want the generic delivery rules first, our HireVue finance interview tips guide covers eye line, pacing, and structure. Use this page for the PNC-specific content that sits on top.

The games and personality section

Several candidate reports describe more than spoken questions. Capital markets applicants, in particular, mention number and shape games and a personality section where you pick from images or statements.

You cannot study for a personality section, and you should not try. The games measure how you process patterns and numbers under light time pressure rather than whether you have memorised a technique. What you can do is arrive calm and unhurried, because rushing a shape game produces errors that say nothing about your ability.

If your invite mentions an assessment as well as a video, treat them as one sitting. Set aside a quiet block rather than squeezing the session between classes.

Two takes and how to use them

The most common report is two attempts per question. That changes how you prepare.

Your first take should be a complete, structured answer, not a warm-up. Your second take is a repair tool for a stumble or a missed point, not a chance to rewrite the story. Practise each answer out loud until one clean pass feels normal, then record. If you have never recorded yourself on camera, do it before the real link opens. Our HireVue practice guide walks through setting that up.

For camera and lighting basics, our desk and camera setup guide covers the small things that make a recording look considered.

A short prep plan for PNC

  1. Re-read the listing and write the line of business at the top of your notes.
  2. Draft a 60-second "tell me about yourself" that ends on why this team.
  3. Write two stories: one teamwork, one conflict or difficult stakeholder.
  4. Add one PNC-specific fact you can explain in a sentence, such as a recent deal, product, or the FirstBank combination where it is relevant to your track.
  5. Record three practice answers and watch them back once.
  6. Fix one thing, then stop. More rehearsal past that point usually makes answers flatter.

Keep notes as bullets off camera. Reading a script is the fastest way to sound like a different person from the one in your application.

PNC states that it does not sponsor work visas, so international candidates should confirm eligibility before investing weeks in one listing. If sponsorship is a factor, our finance internship deadlines guide is a useful reminder that rolling programmes reward early, clean applications over late, perfect ones.

After the video: the line-of-business interview and Super Day

A strong recording usually leads to a conversation with the team, then Super Day. Candidates describe Super Day as two or three rounds of roughly 30 minutes, mostly behavioural, with light technicals on finance tracks. Many are held in Pittsburgh, and PNC covers travel for final rounds.

The important habit is consistency. The story you tell on video will be probed live, sometimes by the same people. Keep the same motivation and the same examples, and add depth rather than new material. If you used our Bank of America HireVue guide for another bank, remember that PNC's franchise story is different. Swap in PNC-specific reasons rather than reusing a bank-generic script.

What to do after reading this

Preparing for a PNC summer internship this cycle? Confirm the line of business on your application, write a 60-second introduction that ends on that team, and record two or three timed answers before the invite arrives.

Keep the process detail on PNC's student careers pages, and use our HireVue practice guide for the delivery habits that carry into Super Day.
